What the AIGP certification costs, every fee, from the IAPP's own handbook

Standfirst: The AIGP exam has one sticker price and three other numbers that decide what you actually pay: the retake fee, the maintenance fee, and the fee you forfeit if you buy it and do not sit it. All four are published. Here they are, with the arithmetic done.

The published fees

These are stated in the IAPP's AIGP Candidate Handbook, verbatim, in the section headed "Pricing and fees."

Two clarifications the handbook adds, both of which people get wrong.

Holding another IAPP certification gets you the retake price. The handbook: "You will also receive this retake discounted fee if you currently hold another IAPP certification." So a CIPP or CIPM holder pays USD 475 as a member on a first AIGP attempt, not USD 649. If you already hold an IAPP credential, do not budget the first-time price.

There is no separate certification fee. The handbook: "No additional fees are required to become AIGP certified." Pass the exam and the credential is issued. There is no application charge, no badge fee, no processing fee.

What it costs to keep it

The exam fee buys you a two-year term, beginning the day after you pass. After that, the recurring cost begins, and it has a cash component and a time component.

The cash component is the certification maintenance fee: USD 250 per term for nonmembers, included in membership for members, provided membership is maintained.

The time component is 20 continuing education credits per two-year term, corresponding to the content of the AIGP body of knowledge. That is not a fee, but it is a cost, and it is the one people underestimate. The IAPP's own credit guide sets rates for how activities convert to credits, and it caps several of them. Reading AI publications earns one credit per 40 pages, capped at five credits per term. Conference and event attendance earns one credit per hour, capped at 12 per event. Whether the remaining credits cost you money depends entirely on how you earn them, and the handbook does not price any of it.

One useful provision: if you exceed the requirement in a two-year period, you may carry over a maximum of 10 credits per certification, but only if they were earned in the six months before the end of the recertification period. Front-load your credits and they expire unused. Earn them late and half your surplus survives into the next term.

The fee most people do not budget for

The retake. It is the difference between a USD 649 exam and a USD 1,124 exam, and whether you pay it is decided months before you sit down.

Note the structure of the pricing. A member's first attempt is USD 649 and a retake is USD 475, so a member who fails once pays USD 1,124 in total. A nonmember who fails once pays USD 1,424. That second number is more than the exam and a first-year membership combined at most plausible membership prices, which is a reason to check the membership arithmetic before you check out rather than after.

The fee you can lose without sitting anything

Buying the exam starts a one-year clock. The handbook: "Candidates must schedule AND complete their exams within one year of purchase or the exam fee will be forfeited."

Forfeited, not deferred, not credited. Buying the exam early as a commitment device is a common tactic and it is a genuine risk: if the year runs out, you pay the full first-time price again, because you never sat the exam and so the retake discount does not apply to you.

Two related constraints worth knowing when you plan the end of that year. Exam appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, and remote proctoring through OnVUE depends on proctor availability and is not available in every country. Do not plan to use the final week of your year.

The total, three ways

Everything below is arithmetic on the published fees. It excludes IAPP membership, training and study materials, because the Candidate Handbook does not price any of them and we do not publish numbers we cannot source.

The nonmember first-time figure is the USD 799 exam plus the USD 250 maintenance fee for the term. Note the ordering trap in the handbook: "If the certification maintenance fee or membership fee is not received by the time you pass the exam, the certification will not be awarded until the fee has been received." A nonmember who passes and has not paid the maintenance fee has passed an exam and does not yet hold a credential.

Whether membership pays for itself

On the published exam fees alone, membership saves USD 150 on a first attempt, USD 150 on each retake, and USD 250 per two-year term in maintenance. Over a single term with a first-time pass, that is USD 400 of avoided cost.

We are not going to tell you whether that beats the membership fee, because the Candidate Handbook does not state the membership fee and we do not hold a source for it. Get the current membership price from the IAPP, set it against USD 400 for the first term and USD 250 for each term after, and the decision is arithmetic. What we can say is that the comparison is closer than the sticker prices suggest, because the maintenance saving repeats every term while the exam saving happens once.

Closing

Budget three numbers, not one. USD 649 or USD 799 to sit it, a real chance of USD 475 or USD 625 more, and USD 250 every two years afterward unless you are a member. Then add the number that is not money: 20 continuing education credits per term, of which reading can only ever supply five.
