Who is the Certified Information Privacy Manager credential for?
In the IAPP's words, it attests to your understanding of how to implement data privacy regulations into day-to-day operations. The exam is about running a privacy program: building it, measuring it and keeping it alive.
Is this CIPM study guide 2026 edition current?
Yes. It covers version 4.2.0, effective 1 September 2025, checked against the IAPP's copy on 12 August 2026. The IAPP reviews it every year and gives at least 90 days' notice of changes. If it shows a newer version, this edition is out of date.
How is the CIPM exam scored?
From 100 to 500, and 300 or above passes. The IAPP warns you not to work out a pass mark by averaging the section percentages in your score report.
What do the CIPM exam questions look like?
Multiple choice, with one or more correct answers, and the question tells you when there is more than one. Some follow a scenario.
How many questions, and how long?
90 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours, with an optional 15-minute break at the halfway point that splits the exam into two halves, according to the IAPP's exam store page.
Do I need a course first?
No course appears in the handbook's steps: you buy the exam in the IAPP store and schedule it with Pearson VUE. The IAPP says to judge readiness by your grasp of every Body of Knowledge topic.
Can I sit it from home, and can I bring this book?
Yes to home: Pearson VUE runs it at test centers and by OnVUE remote proctoring. No to the book: test centers admit no reading material.
What happens after I pass?
The credential only goes active with IAPP membership or a certification maintenance fee.
Are there real exam questions in it?
No. The IAPP says anyone offering live exam content obtained it without permission, and knowingly using it can bring disciplinary action.
Does it include CIPM questions?
Five short-answer questions in every chapter. The multiple-choice practice is in the companion, CIPM Practice Questions: 200 questions weighted to the same item ranges, each with a rationale.

Anyone preparing for the examination it covers, and the trainers and librarians supporting them. It assumes you are a working professional paying for the exam yourself and studying in the evenings.
What is it written from?
the IAPP's own published blueprint, and the primary text of the law, standard or framework the exam tests. Not from a summary, not from another preparation book, and not from a model's memory. Each source is listed at the back with the date it was checked.
How is it weighted?
By the exam board's own published blueprint. A domain that carries more of the exam gets more of the book, so you can see where the marks are before deciding where your evenings go.
Will it tell me the pass rate?
No. the IAPP does not publish one for this exam, and this book states nothing it cannot trace.
Is it a substitute for the standard or the law?
No. Where the exam tests a paid standard, you will need your own licensed copy, and the book says so rather than pretending otherwise. Where the law is public, the book teaches from its own text and cites it.
