AIGP or ISO 42001

AIGP or ISO 42001 Lead Implementer: which suits an AI governance team?

Side-by-side comparison. AIGP: 100 questions, 3 hours, 300 of 100 to 500 to pass, no prerequisites. ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer: 80 questions, 3 hours, open book, 70% to pass, taken after a five-day course.

The IAPP's AIGP and PECB's ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer are the two credentials most AI governance teams shortlist. They answer different questions. The AIGP asks whether you can govern AI across laws, standards and frameworks. The Lead Implementer asks whether you can build one standard's AI management system and take it to a certification audit. This page compares them from each board's own documents.

What does each one test?

The AIGP's four domains run from the foundations of AI governance, through how laws, standards and frameworks apply to AI, to governing AI development and governing its deployment and use. Domain II covers how AI-specific laws such as the EU AI Act, and AI standards and frameworks, apply. Our guide to the AIGP blueprint lists every competency and its item range.

The ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer has six domains, all about one standard: fundamentals of an AI management system, its requirements, planning, implementation, monitoring and measurement, and continual improvement with preparation for the certification audit. Planning and implementation carry 38 of the 80 questions, and 60% of the questions are at the evaluation level. Domain 1 touches the EU's risk classification and ISO/IEC 22989 terms, but the exam stays with the standard. Our guide to the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam has the domain counts.

Who is each one for?

The boards' own audience statements point the same way. The IAPP aims the AIGP at "any professionals tasked with developing AI governance and risk management in their operations". PECB aims the Lead Implementer course at "professionals responsible for overseeing and managing AI projects", consultants advising on AI implementation, and executives and managers deciding on AI implementation and its alignment with ISO/IEC 42001.

Our reading: a privacy, legal or risk professional building an AI governance program across several jurisdictions fits the AIGP. A project lead, consultant or compliance manager asked to implement ISO/IEC 42001 fits the Lead Implementer. A team that has to do both will often split them across two people.

What experience do you need?

To sit, none for the AIGP: the IAPP's handbook states there are no prerequisites. The PECB exam comes at the end of the course, and the credential you receive depends on experience: Provisional Implementer needs none, Implementer two years with one in AI and 200 project hours, Lead Implementer five years with two in AI and 300 hours. Our guide to the ISO 42001 credential levels has a project log template.

How should you prepare?

For the AIGP, split your hours by the published item ranges; our AIGP study plan does it for 40 hours. For the Lead Implementer, read the standard before Day 1; our pre-course reading list is free to share with a cohort. The AIGP study guide is mapped to all 13 competencies, and the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam guide follows PECB's six domains.

What should you do this week?

Decide which question your team must answer first: "how do we govern AI across the laws that apply to us?" points to the AIGP; "how do we implement and certify ISO/IEC 42001?" points to the Lead Implementer. Credential Press is independent of the IAPP and PECB.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the AIGP and ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

The IAPP's AIGP covers AI governance across laws, standards and frameworks, and anyone can buy and sit it. PECB's ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer covers implementing one standard's AI management system, and is normally taken at the end of a five-day course.

Which is cheaper, the AIGP or ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

On the exam alone, the AIGP: US$799 for non-members or US$649 for IAPP members, against a PECB course whose fee includes the exam and is set by the training partner. Upkeep is US$250 per two-year term for the AIGP and US$390 per three-year cycle for a PECB certification.

Is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam open book?

Yes. PECB allows a hard copy of ISO/IEC 42001, your training course materials and personal notes taken during the course. Check the IAPP's own exam rules for what the AIGP allows.

Do I need experience for either?

Not to sit. The IAPP's handbook states the AIGP has no prerequisites. PECB's Lead Implementer credential needs five years of experience, two in AI, and 300 hours of project activities, but PECB's Provisional Implementer credential needs none.

Which should an AI governance team take first?
Our suggestion

The AIGP for people building a governance program across several laws and frameworks, and the ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer for people asked to implement an AI management system and prepare for certification against the standard. Many teams will want both, held by different people.
