PECB exams
What happens after a PECB exam: results, re-evaluation and retakes?

After a PECB multiple-choice exam, your result arrives by email: instantly if you sat online, in two to four weeks if you sat on paper. If you fail, the email lists the domains where you performed poorly, you have 30 days to ask for a re-evaluation, and you can retake as many times as you need, with minimum gaps between attempts. Whether the first retake is free depends on your course page, and the three we read do not say quite the same thing.
Everything here comes from PECB's version 1.5 Candidate Handbooks for the ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 22301 and ISO/IEC 27701 Lead Implementer exams and from their course pages, all read on 2 October 2026. The handbook rules on results, re-evaluation and retakes are the same in every handbook we read for PECB's multiple-choice Lead exams. The course pages are where they part ways.
When do PECB exam results arrive?
| How you sat it | Result by email |
|---|---|
| Online, multiple choice | Instantly |
| On paper, multiple choice | Two to four weeks |
| Essay exam | Three to eight weeks |
In English, the Lead exams for ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 22301 and ISO/IEC 27701 are 80-question multiple choice, per the List of PECB Exams. Essay versions are still listed in some other languages, such as Spanish, Portuguese and French, so if you sat in one of those, check which format you took before you start counting weeks.
What does the results email tell you if you fail?
It lists the domains where you performed poorly. That list is worth more than it looks, because your handbook tells you how many questions each domain carries. In the ISO/IEC 42001 exam, a list that names planning (20 questions) and implementation (18) points at 38 of the 80. A list that names AIMS requirements points at 5. Same email, very different retake. Our breakdown of the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam domains has all six weights in one table.
How do you ask PECB to re-evaluate your exam?
Request a re-evaluation within 30 days of receiving your results. On paper, where results take two to four weeks, the 30 days start when the email arrives, not when you sat the exam. Write the deadline down the day the result lands; the timeline template below has a line for it. Check your handbook and PECB's Exam Rules and Policies page, which every handbook links to, for how to send the request.
Can you appeal a re-evaluation decision?
Yes. If you are still not satisfied after the re-evaluation, you can appeal through the PECB Ticketing System within 30 days of the re-evaluation decision. Under PECB's Complaint and Appeal Policy, later appeals are not processed, so treat that deadline as final.
That makes two clocks in a row: result plus 30 days to request a re-evaluation, then decision plus 30 days to appeal. We have no published turnaround for the re-evaluation itself, so date the appeal deadline the day the decision arrives, counting from the date of the decision.
How many times can you retake a PECB exam?
As many as you need. The handbooks set no limit on the number of retakes, but they do limit the time between them. The gaps are on PECB's Exam Rules and Policies page, linked from every handbook. That page did not load for us on 2 October 2026, so we are not printing the gaps here. Check the page before you book, and plan your retake date around it.
Is a PECB retake free?
If you completed the course, each of the three course pages offers one free retake, but the conditions differ. Here is each one, word for word:
- ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer: "Candidates who have completed the training course but failed the exam are eligible to retake the exam once for free within 12 months from the initial date of the exam."
- ISO 22301 Lead Implementer: the same sentence, except that it ends "once for free within a 12-month period from the initial date of the exam."
- ISO/IEC 27701 Lead Implementer: "Candidates who have completed the training course with one of our partners and failed the first exam attempt are eligible to retake the exam for free within a 12-month period from the course completion date, because the fee paid for the training course includes a first exam attempt and one retake. Otherwise, retake fees apply."
Four differences matter:
- When the 12 months start. For 42001 and 22301, the initial date of the exam. For 27701, the course completion date, which may not be your exam date.
- Where you trained. Only the 27701 wording says the course must be completed "with one of our partners".
- Which attempt. The 27701 page says "failed the first exam attempt"; the other two say "failed the exam".
- What happens otherwise. Only the 27701 wording adds that retake fees apply.
All three tie the free retake to completing the course, which also earns an attestation of course completion worth 31 CPD credits; keep it with your exam paperwork. Course pages change, so our suggestion is to save a copy of the wording on the day you enroll.

Checklist
- The day the result arrives: write the re-evaluation deadline in your calendar (our suggestion)
- Decide within the 30 days whether to request a re-evaluation (PECB rule)
- If you appeal, use the PECB Ticketing System within 30 days of the decision (PECB rule)
- Check the minimum gap between attempts on PECB's Exam Rules and Policies page (PECB rule)
- Check which free-retake clock your course page uses, and keep your attestation of course completion (our suggestion)
- Sit one full timed paper, 80 questions in 180 minutes, before the retake (our suggestion)
- Bring only what PECB allows: a hard copy of the standard, your course materials, and personal notes taken during the training course (PECB rule)
How should you plan a retake from the failed-domains list?
Treat the list as a budget.
- Write each listed domain next to its question count and level from your handbook. In ISO/IEC 27701, implementation alone is 23 questions at evaluation level.
- Put your hours where the listed questions are. Evaluation-level domains need timed practice on cases, and our guide to how PECB scenario-based questions work has a method. Comprehension-level domains need clear definitions and fast lookups.
- Recheck your tabs for those domains, using our guide to what you can take into a PECB open-book exam. The handbook allows personal notes taken during the training course, so ask PECB before you bring anything written after it.
- Sit one full timed paper, 80 questions in 180 minutes, before the retake.
- Book after the minimum gap and before your free-retake window closes.
Retaking ISO/IEC 42001? Pair this with our ISO 42001 Lead Implementer study plan. The ISO 42001 Lead Implementer Kindle edition is mapped to all six competency domains, so start with the ones on your list, and the ISO 42001 practice exam paperback has 227 questions with full rationales, weighted to the published item counts. For business continuity, the ISO 22301 Lead Implementer book is written for the same 80-question multiple-choice format.
What do you do after you pass?
You need 70%, 56 of 80, to pass. Then apply for the credential your experience supports, because the same exam leads to more than one. For ISO/IEC 42001, PECB's course page lists four:
| Credential | Professional experience | Project activities |
|---|---|---|
| Provisional Implementer | None | None |
| Implementer | 2 years, at least 1 in artificial intelligence | At least 200 hours |
| Lead Implementer | 5 years, at least 2 in artificial intelligence | At least 300 hours |
| Senior Lead Implementer | 10 years, at least 7 in artificial intelligence | At least 1,000 hours |
Each one also requires signing the PECB Code of Ethics. Our guide to ISO 42001 Lead Implementer requirements has the detail. For ISO 22301 or ISO/IEC 27701, check the credential requirements on that exam's course page.
PECB's handbooks describe its certification schemes as in compliance with ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for personnel certification. One rule carries on after you pass: disclosing anything about the content of a PECB exam violates the Code of Ethics, and PECB may revoke credentials over it. Credential Press is independent of PECB and ISO.
Frequently asked questions
How long do PECB exam results take?
Results come by email. Online multiple-choice results arrive instantly, paper-based multiple choice takes two to four weeks, and essay exams take three to eight weeks.
What does PECB tell you if you fail?
The results email lists the domains where you performed poorly. Match them to the question counts in your Candidate Handbook to decide where your retake hours go.
Can I ask PECB to re-evaluate my exam?
Yes. You can request a re-evaluation within 30 days of receiving your results. If you are still not satisfied, you can appeal through the PECB Ticketing System within 30 days of the re-evaluation decision; later appeals are not processed.
How many times can I retake a PECB exam?
There is no limit on the number of retakes, but PECB limits the time between them. The gaps are on PECB's Exam Rules and Policies page, which every Candidate Handbook links to.
Is the first PECB retake free?
It depends on the course page. The ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO 22301 Lead Implementer pages offer one free retake within 12 months of the initial exam date to candidates who completed the course. The ISO/IEC 27701 page counts 12 months from the course completion date, requires the course to be taken with a PECB partner, and says retake fees apply otherwise.
Which credential do I get after passing?
The one your experience supports. For ISO/IEC 42001, the same exam leads to Provisional Implementer with no experience, up to Senior Lead Implementer with 10 years of professional experience, at least seven in artificial intelligence, and at least 1,000 hours of project activities. Each also requires signing the PECB Code of Ethics.
